The scriptures have a framework:
When God speaks, there is life.
God is speaking.
Speaking to you.
Speaking to me.
Speaking to us.
God is speaking to us at EVERY moment.
Every moment of every second, every breath that you inhale is drenched in this reality.
It is God’s Word to you that brings you life.
If you do not hear God speak, if you do not take the time to listen and hear the voice of God in your life…
You will never know life.
He sustains all things through His Word.
Satan Tempts Jesus
1 Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. 2 And when He had fasted forty days and forty nights, afterward He was hungry. 3 Now when the tempter came to Him, he said, “If You are the Son of God, command that these stones become bread.”
4 But He answered and said, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.’”
It is important to note that Jesus had a physical concrete hunger.
Satan is coming to Jesus in a moment of weakness.
He knows that Jesus has not eaten for 40 days and he knows what His body is screaming for.
Satan tempts Jesus with His own power by conniving that Jesus turn stones into bread to fill His hunger.
Jesus replies,“It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.’”
How many times have we heard this mis-preached from the pulpit?
Jesus is not presenting a spiritual innuendo.
Jesus is not saying, ” I do not need to eat, I just need to spend some time meditating on Psalms 32:6.”
In fact, after 40 days with no food any human would be tempted to cook the paper to get any form of sustenance.
Jesus is presenting a framework of reality.
“You are telling me that if I turn these stones to bread, outside of the relationship with my Father, that bread would feed me?
You are wrong evil one.
It is not the bread that meets my needs, it is that My Father has spoken into the bread and gave it life.
I do not have to turn these stones into bread because My Father can speak and rid of my hunger at any second.”
Jesus is actually quoting a passage from the Old Testament:
Remember the LORD Your God
1 “Every commandment which I command you today you must be careful to observe, that you may live and multiply, and go in and possess the land of which the LORD swore to your fathers. 2 And you shall remember that the LORD your God led you all the way these forty years in the wilderness, to humble you and test you, to know what was in your heart, whether you would keep His commandments or not. 3 So He humbled you, allowed you to hunger, and fed you with manna which you did not know nor did your fathers know, that He might make you know that man shall not live by bread alone; but man lives by every word that proceeds from the mouth of the LORD. 4 Your garments did not wear out on you, nor did your foot swell these forty years. 5 You should know in your heart that as a man chastens his son, so the LORD your God chastens you.
6 “Therefore you shall keep the commandments of the LORD your God, to walk in His ways and to fear Him.
In this passage Moses explains how God provided for His people.
As long as they listened to His Word their clothes would stay in good shape and their bellies would be fed with manna from Heaven.
God is constantly speaking.
He is trying to get your attention.
God has a desire and a longing to know you.
He wants to lead you out of the wilderness.
Without His voice in your life you can not live.
If you seek a relationship with God, allow His voice to permeate the deepest part of your being,
Allow Him to inform you and guide you,
Allow Him to speak His story into your life,
He will change your story.
“In the beginning was the Word…”
John understood that what brings life are the Words of God.
What brings life is when God speaks
and we listen.
Wrap our lives around His voice.
Move in concert with his voice.
Conversing with God is like breathing.
